A total solar eclipse will be visible from parts of U.S., Mexico and Canada on April 8, 2024. Probably you have already heard about it in the news, especially if you live along the path of totality. Everyone knows you shouldn’t stare at the sun during an eclipse. However, as it turns out, your mobile phone’s camera isn’t suitable as well!
The famous Youtuber Marques Brownlee posted a question on X (previous Twitter) asking whether pointing a smartphone at the solar eclipse will fry your sensor. NASA stepped in and said that the phone sensor could be damaged like any other camera sensor. Proper filters should be used just like on any other camera! The word “could” was used though so there still seems to be space (pan intended) for discussion!
So, as NASA recommends, and to be safe rather than sorry, use a pair of eclipse glasses to protect your smartphone’s camera in the same way that you protect your eyes!
If you want to see the total solar eclipse as it passes over North America, NASA will live stream it!
